Motherwell's European adventure for this season is over after a 4-1 defeat away to SC Freiburg in the Conference League play-off second leg. The result gave the German side a 7-2 aggregate victory and ended the Steelmen's hopes of reaching the group stage.
Freiburg, last season's Europa League finalists, took an early lead at the Europa-Park Stadion. Derry Scherhant fired them ahead in the sixth minute, finishing from ten yards after a pass from Maximilian Eggestein. Motherwell responded well and found an equaliser in the 22nd minute. Emmanuel Longelo capitalised on a fumble by Freiburg goalkeeper Mio Backhaus, striking the ball home from 22 yards out.
The match's pivotal moment arrived just before the hour mark. With the score level at 1-1, Motherwell defender Jake Girdwood-Reich was shown a straight red card. It was the second time in the tie the Scottish side had been reduced to ten men, following Martin Moormann's dismissal in the first leg. Manager Alfred Johansson acknowledged the impact. "I think we competed really, really well for 60 minutes and after that obviously it becomes much more difficult once again," the Swedish boss said.
Freiburg quickly exploited their numerical advantage. Igor Matanovic put them back in front on the hour mark, scoring from four yards out from a corner. Just three minutes later, Cyriaque Irie made it 3-1, heading in from six yards after another set-piece. The hosts added a fourth through Keisuke Goto with five minutes remaining, his shot coming from 12 yards. Freiburg could have scored more, hitting the woodwork twice after their third goal.
Despite the final scoreline, Motherwell created chances before Girdwood-Reich's sending off. In the 17th minute, Jamie Knight-Lebel headed a good opportunity from an Alex Lowry free-kick. Seb Palmer-Houlden also forced Backhaus into a save with a low shot. Freiburg had threatened too, with Cyriaque Irie hitting the crossbar before the break and Yuito Suzuki being denied by Motherwell goalkeeper Alex Paulsen. The 1,400 travelling supporters provided vocal backing throughout.
Attention now turns fully to the Scottish Premiership. Motherwell currently sit fourth in the table with four points from their opening two matches, following a win and a draw. They have scored two goals and conceded one, giving them a positive goal difference. They are just two points behind leaders Celtic. The current league standings show a tight early-season race.
Alfred Johansson reflected on a tie where his team was competitive for long periods but ultimately undone. He questioned whether his side could have defended set-pieces better after going a man down. "Could we have done that a little bit better?" Johansson stated.
