Motherwell have signed Sweden Under-21 forward Jardell Kanga from Finnish top-flight side Ilves. The 20-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Scottish Premiership club, which includes an option for an additional 12 months.
Kanga arrives at Fir Park with a notable early career history. He made his first-team debut at just 15 years old for Swedish third-tier club Brommapojkarna in 2021, becoming their youngest-ever player. A move to German giants Bayer Leverkusen followed in 2022, where he featured for their youth sides and had a loan spell at Dutch club De Graafschap. He joined Hammarby permanently two years ago before moving to Ilves in April 2025, initially on loan. He made 68 appearances for the Finnish club, scoring 18 goals and providing 16 assists.
Alfred Johansson, the Motherwell manager, has tracked the young forward for several years. Johansson had tried to sign Kanga on multiple occasions during the player's youth career. His persistence has now paid off, bringing a player he knows well to a squad sitting fourth in the Premiership with four points from two games. The club's positive start, with one win and one draw, provides a solid platform for new arrivals.
"Jardell is a player I have followed closely for a number of years," Johansson said. The manager's familiarity with Kanga's development suggests he has a clear plan for integrating him into the team. Motherwell's current league position, just two points behind leaders Celtic, shows a competitive environment for the new signing to enter.
The young Swede joins an attack that has scored two goals while conceding only one so far this season, giving the team a +1 goal difference. His versatility and goal contributions from wide areas could provide a fresh option for Johansson. Fans can see how he slots into the squad as the season progresses.
Kanga himself expressed enthusiasm about the move. "The style of play is perfect, the group of players are friendly and talented, and the club is ambitious," he said. His words highlight the positive atmosphere he is joining at Fir Park.
The immediate focus shifts to integrating Kanga and maintaining their early-season form. The fixture list presents a major challenge soon, with a trip to face league leaders Celtic scheduled for December 26th. That match is prominently featured on the club's fixtures list. Before that, the team will look to build on their solid defensive record and find more consistency in front of goal.
This signing signals Motherwell's intent to strengthen their push up the standings. With the transfer window still open, it remains to be seen if further business will be conducted to bolster the group competing on all fronts this season.
