Motherwell are on the verge of adding one or two new players to their squad, manager Alfred Johansson confirmed on Friday, as the club prepares for their Scottish Premiership opener.
What did Johansson say?
The Fir Park boss stressed that any new arrivals must match the club’s style and ethos. “The players that we want to bring have to be along the same lines of the recruitments the last couple of years,” he said. “They need to fit the way we want to behave and treat people here.” Intensity, hard work, and a team-first mentality are non-negotiable traits for potential signings.
Why does this matter now?
Motherwell finished the 2025 Premiership season in 4th place with 54 points (14W-12D-7L from 33 games), scoring 52 goals and conceding 29 (+23 goal difference), 16 points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian. With key departures like Elijah Just, Callum Slattery, Elliot Watt, and Calum Ward, Johansson is rebuilding a squad that already showed promise by advancing past HB Torshavn in Conference League qualifying.
What’s next for Motherwell?
The Steelmen kick off their 2026-27 Premiership campaign away to Hibernian on Sunday (16:30 BST). Johansson’s focus remains on reinforcing the squad with players who can contribute immediately. “We’re going to do our best, knowing that it’s a long season,” he added, with the next fixture after the opener set for home against Dundee on 19 December 2026.
