Motherwell stun Fir Park with debutant debuts in Europe

Motherwell opened their Europa Conference League campaign with a 2-0 win over Havnar Boltfelag at Fir Park on 25 July 2026, but boss Alfred Johansson admitted his eight debutants didn’t even know each other’s names before kick-off. The Steelmen, missing key men to injury and big-money sales, fielded six starters making their first appearance for the club and two more off the bench.

A night of firsts and shocks

Johansson’s side struggled for cohesion in patches, with new signings still finding their feet. Martin Moormann and Lukas Fadinger scored the goals, but the Swede confessed some players were so green they asked, “Who is that?” when instructed to pass to a teammate. The manager said: “We played some good football and some really good periods. Given the context of eight players making their debut for Motherwell, six in the starting XI, two off the bench and three academy graduates making their debut, it is quite impressive to look that much of a collective.”

League standing (final 2025 table -- new season not yet under way): 4th in Premiership, 54 pts, 14W-12D-7L from 33 games, recent form WLDLW. Goals this season: 52 scored, 29 conceded (+23 goal difference). Title race: 16 points behind leaders Heart Of Midlothian. Last result: Hibernian 0-1 Motherwell (2026-05-16). Recent form (last 5): 2W-1D-2L (WWLLD, most recent first); on a 2-game winning run. Next fixture: vs Heart Of Midlothian (at home, 2026-10-24) (1st in the table).

Fans rally behind the Steelmen

More than 7,700 supporters packed Fir Park, including 4,500 season-ticket holders, to cheer the side. Johansson said: “That shows the buzz and vibe around the team and how the fans and everybody around the club enjoy what the club is doing.” He warned the tie is far from over, with the return in the Faroe Islands still to come.

Tough road ahead in the Faroes

Havnar Boltfelag may sit 0-2 down, but they remain a side with European pedigree. Johansson insisted: “It is half-time and you win zero games at half-time. You win after the two legs, 180 minutes plus. This is a team with a European pedigree.” He expects some of his injured stars to return for the second leg, but added: “Who and how many? I can’t tell you just now. We will have to assess the situation in the coming week.”
