Motherwell have pulled off a surprise coup by landing Alex Lowry on a season-long loan from Wycombe Wanderers, adding a technically gifted midfielder to their Premiership ranks.
What’s the move?
The 23-year-old joins after a productive spell in League One, where he struck three goals in 24 games last season. His last competitive outing came on Boxing Day 2025, but Motherwell’s staff see potential in his Scottish top-flight know-how and creative flair. The Steelmen sit fourth in the Premiership with 54 points from last season’s 33-game campaign, 16 adrift of Hearts, and open their new campaign with a home date against the capital side on 24 October 2026.
What does the gaffer say?
Alfred Johansson, the Motherwell manager, called it a great opportunity for both club and player. “He is a technically gifted footballer who enjoys being on the ball and being creative,” Johansson told club media. “His knowledge of Scottish football and experience here could prove vital over the next 12 months.” The staff have been meticulous in their scouting, and the manager expects a smooth transition into the first team.
What’s Lowry’s path to Fir Park?
Lowry’s footballing journey has already taken in Rangers, where he made his debut in January 2022 and later featured in a Champions League tie against Ajax from the bench. A short-lived Hearts loan in 2023-24 was cut short after 12 starts, before he moved to Wycombe in January 2025. Now he’s back up the road, as he put it, eager to kick on with a side that conceded just 29 goals last season and sits on a +23 goal difference.
What’s next for the Steelmen?
Lowry won’t feature in Thursday’s Conference League qualifier away to Havnar Boltfelag due to ineligibility, but he arrives as Motherwell’s recent form reads two wins and two losses from the last four outings. The Steelmen have already beaten Hibernian 1-0 on 16 May 2026, and their next fixture sees them host Hearts on 24 October 2026 in a top-of-the-table clash. With 52 goals scored last season, Johansson’s side will look to add Lowry’s creativity to an attack that already keeps the ball moving.
League standing (final 2025 table - new season not yet under way): 4th in Premiership, 54 pts, 14W-12D-7L from 33 games, recent form WLDLW.
