Motherwell have completed seven new signings ahead of the 2026/27 Scottish Premiership season, including loans from Rangers and permanent deals. The Steelmen have been active in the transfer market as they prepare for the new campaign, with a mix of experienced players and young talents joining the club.

The club has brought in seven new faces, including three loan signings from Rangers. Saoirse Coyle-Morrow, a 16-year-old midfielder, joins on a season-long loan from Rangers. Coyle-Morrow previously played for Celtic before joining Rangers at the age of 12. She made her senior debut at 15 in a Sky Sports Cup Quarter-Final against Partick Thistle and scored her first senior goal in an 8-0 Scottish Cup win over Renfrew Ladies.

Mia McArthur, a 19-year-old midfielder, also joins on a season-long loan from Rangers, subject to SFA clearance. McArthur previously played on loan at Motherwell last season and has been regularly selected for the Scotland under-19 squad.

Sophie Rutherford, a midfielder, is the third Rangers player to join on a season-long loan. Rutherford has had loan spells with Queens Park in SWPL2.

In addition to the loan signings, Motherwell have also made four permanent signings. Eva Thomson, a 22-year-old forward, joins from Aberdeen. Thomson signed for Aberdeen in July 2019 and was one of the first five players on semi-professional terms in May 2022. She scored 10 goals in 18 appearances in her first full season with Aberdeen and 6 goals the following season, helping Aberdeen achieve double promotions. Thomson made 190 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring 38 goals in all competitions. She earned Scotland under-16 caps and won the April SPWPL Goal of the Month and was nominated for SPWPL Player of the Month.

Olivia McStay, an 18-year-old defender, joins permanently from Hamilton Accies. McStay previously played for Celtic and Hamilton Accies on loan. Her father, Jock McStay, played for Motherwell in the 1980s, and her uncle, Francis McStay, made 214 appearances for Motherwell across eight years. Paul McStay, another uncle, is Celtic’s third all-time appearance holder and a Scotland legend.

Morgan Anderson, a forward, joins permanently from Gartcairn. Anderson previously played for Drumchapel United and Partick Thistle.

Lucy Sinclair, a 23-year-old midfielder, joins permanently from Partick Thistle. Sinclair previously left Motherwell in 2021 to seek first-team opportunities. She won Partick Thistle’s Young Player of the Year twice but suffered an ACL injury against Dundee United, ruling her out for an extended period.

Ellie MacDonald, a 24-year-old midfielder, joins permanently from Queens Park. MacDonald was Queens Park’s Coaches Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season.

Leah Sidey, a midfielder, joins permanently from Boroughmuir Thistle. Sidey was Boroughmuir Thistle’s Player of the Year and Supporters Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season. She previously played for Dundee United, St. Johnstone, and Spartans.

Justine Strain, a 17-year-old forward, joins permanently from Livingston. Strain was Livingston’s top goalscorer and won the SPWPL2 Golden Boot with 18 goals. She was named in the SPWPL2 Team of the Year.

The new signings will bolster Motherwell’s squad as they look to build on their fourth-place finish in the 2025 Premiership season. The Steelmen finished with 54 points, 14 wins, 12 draws, and 7 losses from 33 games. They scored 52 goals and conceded 29, with a goal difference of +23. Motherwell finished 16 points behind leaders Heart of Midlothian.

The club’s recent form has been strong, with a 2-1 win over Hibernian in their last match of the 2025 season. They are currently on a two-game winning run, with a record of 2 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses in their last five matches (WWLLD, most recent first).

Motherwell currently have several players sidelined with injuries, including Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, Callum Hendry, Jordan McGhee, and Paul McGinn. The new signings will provide much-needed depth and competition for places in the squad.

The new signings will add to the competition for places in the Motherwell squad. The loan signings from Rangers will provide young talent and potential for the future, while the permanent signings bring experience and goalscoring ability.

Eva Thomson’s goalscoring record at Aberdeen will be a welcome addition to the Motherwell attack, while Olivia McStay’s defensive abilities will strengthen the backline. The midfield will be bolstered by the signings of Lucy Sinclair, Ellie MacDonald, and Leah Sidey, who bring experience and leadership to the squad.

The young talents of Saoirse Coyle-Morrow, Mia McArthur, and Justine Strain will provide energy and potential for the future. The new signings will be looking to make an immediate impact and help Motherwell challenge for a top-three finish in the 2026/27 season.
