Republic of Ireland international midfielder Joe Hodge has officially joined Motherwell Football Club. The 23-year-old arrives with a diverse background, having most recently spent a year with Portuguese side C.D. Tondela.
Hodge's move bolsters a Motherwell squad currently sitting 3rd in the Scottish Premiership with 8 points from their first four matches. The team's solid start, featuring two wins and two draws, has them just four points behind leaders Celtic. Hodge expressed his immediate satisfaction with the switch. "I'm feeling really settled early on here, which is good because the transfer dragged on a lot longer that I would've wanted it to," Hodge said.
Joe Hodge's career path is far from ordinary for a graduate of Manchester City's esteemed academy, which he joined at age nine. After winning the club's Scholar of the Year award and the FA Youth Cup in 2020, his progression was halted by a severe back injury that scuppered a loan to Derry City and cost him 13 months of football. His resilience was noted by former coach James Collins in 2022, who stated, "Nobody I know works harder than him or sticks at it, showing resilience like him."
Hodge eventually made his Premier League debut for Wolverhampton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea, later starting matches against Everton and in the FA Cup at Anfield. A loan to Queens Park Rangers and 27 appearances for Huddersfield Town in League One followed before his move abroad to Tondela in the summer of 2025.
The midfielder describes his season in Portugal's second tier as a formative, if difficult, experience. "I think it was a really important part of my career," Hodge acknowledged. He found himself in a "relegation dogfight pretty much from the word go" in an unfamiliar environment where he had to quickly learn Portuguese. Despite the challenges, he says he "thoroughly enjoyed" the year, gaining a unique perspective on the game. This blend of youth football in England, a tough loan in League One, international duty, and a season abroad gives Hodge what he calls "a nice blend of experience."
Hodge has already made his club debut, coming off the bench against Stenhousemuir. He arrives at a confident time for the team, who have scored eight goals while conceding only four so far this campaign. The player himself did his homework before signing, noting he "watched a lot of the games from last year and this season" and believes the manager's style of play "suits where I see myself as a player." His versatility and combativeness could prove valuable in a midfield looking to maintain its early-season form. Fans can view the full squad details on the club's squad page.
Hodge will be aiming to force his way into the starting lineup as Motherwell prepare for their next fixture, an away match against Heart of Midlothian on December 12th. The Jam Tarts are currently 6th in the table, setting up a potentially tight contest. The full schedule leading up to that clash is available on the fixtures page.
