Jake Girdwood-Reich has made 13 appearances for Motherwell since his arrival in July, a rapid integration the Australian defender credits to being thrown straight into competitive action. His reflections come as the Steelmen, ninth in the Premiership with eight points from seven games, prepare to host league leaders Celtic at Fir Park on Sunday.

"When I got here, there were only a few days before I had to play my first competitive game," Girdwood-Reich said. He was fast-tracked into the side for a UEFA Conference League qualifier against Havnar Bóltfelag, landing in Scotland in mid-July without a pre-season. "The games have come thick and fast for me, but I think it was probably the best way for me to get into the side," he added.

From Sydney to Scotland

The 22-year-old centre-back's journey began with junior football in Sydney before he signed with Sydney FC at age 12. He progressed through the academy, making his first-team debut in 2022 and playing a key role in their Australian Cup triumph that same year. Girdwood-Reich started 23 matches in the 2023 A-League season, scoring his first goal and earning a spot in the PFA Players’ Team of the Season, which preceded a move to MLS side St Louis City in 2024.

Adapting to the Premiership

Girdwood-Reich stated he has quickly learned about the physical demands of Scottish football, a style he believes suits him. He also enjoys Motherwell's possession-based approach under manager Alfred Johansson, calling it his favourite system so far in his career. Off the pitch, having family in Falkirk and Glasgow has provided a key support network, helping him settle far from home.

A key fixture ahead

His adaptation is set for another stern test this weekend. Motherwell host Celtic looking to halt a run of three consecutive league defeats, a sequence that includes losses to Dundee, Aberdeen and Rangers. The team's recent form reads LLLWD from their last five outings, leaving them ten points behind their upcoming opponents. Johansson is expected to be without Callum Hendry, Johnny Koutroumbis, Jordan McGhee, Paul McGinn and Oscar Priestman due to injury, which may prompt changes to the attacking lineup. Celtic also arrive with their own selection concerns, potentially missing Alistair Johnston, Callum Osmand and Jota, while Benjamin Nygren is a doubt. The champions are looking to bounce back from their own poor run of form. For Girdwood-Reich and Motherwell, the focus is on improvement. The defender says he is still learning what the manager wants and aims to get better every day. The next opportunity comes at Fir Park on Sunday, 11 October.
