Motherwell have completed the signing of 22-year-old centre-back Jake Girdwood-Reich from MLS side St Louis City on a three-year deal. The Australian defender becomes the club's fourth summer signing and arrives with experience from both Australia and the United States.
Who is Jake Girdwood-Reich?
Girdwood-Reich began his footballing career in Sydney before spending time with St Johnstone's academy in Scotland. He joined St Louis City in 2024, making 23 senior appearances for the MLS side. Last season, he spent time on loan with Auckland FC in Australia's A-League.
Why did Motherwell sign him?
The defender was impressed by manager Alfred Johansson's vision for the team. "The manager was impressive in the way he explained how he wanted the team to play," Girdwood-Reich told club media. "I know what he expects from me, and I know what I can expect from him."
Johansson praised Girdwood-Reich's blend of experience and youthful energy. "At 22, he is young, enthusiastic and energetic. With lots of development still possible, he has enough experience to slot in comfortably in this environment," the head coach said.
What does this mean for Motherwell's defence?
Girdwood-Reich's arrival adds depth and competition to Motherwell's defensive options. His experience in different leagues and his ability to adapt quickly should help him settle in at Fir Park. The club will hope his defensive intelligence and physicality can bolster their backline as they prepare for the new season.
